Homebrew Magic Item Generator

This tool randomly generates D&D 5e items with (hopefully) unique magical enchantments. I hope this helps when your players want to loot the body of random goblin #3.

The generator uses a list of items and a list of magical effects to generate its items. You can select specific item categories or magical effect power levels to narrow down the types of items it creates. A CSV file with the complete list of 510 magic effects can be downloaded here.

About the Magic Item Generator

The magic item generator randomly selects from lists of items and lists of magical effects to create unique magical items. There are a total of 243 items and 353 magical effects to choose from. Each item can have up to 4 magical effects (including 63 curses) OR it can have up to 4 magical effects (excluding 63 curses) plus an additional curse effect. The total number of unique items comes out to 112,436,233,914,870. More details on how the generator works are provided below.

The list of 243 items is divided up into 11 item categories. A full list of all items and their categories is provided here. When an item is generated, a random category is chosen from the list of categories selected in the options above the generator. All categories in the list have an equal chance of being selected, regardless of the number of items in the category. Once a category is chosen, a random item from that category is then selected from the database. Up to 5 items can be generated at a time.

The magical effects are divided into 5 power levels: mundane, low, medium, high, and curse. A more in-depth description of these power levels can be found here. After an item has been selected, a random power level is chosen from the list of power levels selected in the options above the generator. All power levels have an equal chance of being selected, regardless of the number of effects in the power level. Up to 4 effects can be applied to a single item. If the ‘Add Curse’ option is selected, the curse power level is not included when selecting the main effect(s) of an item. Instead, an additional curse effect is randomly selected and added to the end of the item’s description.

In addition to the ‘Add Curse’ option, the magic item generator also includes several optional fields that can be toggled on/off in the ‘Other Options’ section. The ‘Show Price’ option allows you toggle on/off the suggested price of each item. When selected, the generator will display the suggested price as part of the item details (the italicized line just under the item name).

The price is calculated by taking the base price of the item and adding a number based on the power level of each effect on that item: mundane = 25 gp, low = 100 gp, medium = 250 gp, and high = 500 gp (curses are worth 0 gp). For example, let’s say the generator spits out a shortsword with two effects: 1 medium and 1 high. The price for that item would be the sum of the shortsword’s base value, the medium effect’s value, and the high effect’s value for a total of 760 gp (10 + 250 + 500 = 760).

The ‘Show Suggested Level’ option allows you to toggle on/off the suggested level for each item. When selected, the generator will display the suggested level as part of the item details (the italicized line just under the item name).

The suggested level provides a guideline for the minimum level your players should be to receive that particular item. This can also be used as a rough indication of how powerful each item is. For example, an item with a suggested level of 13 is significantly more powerful than an item with a suggested level of 4. This is by no means meant to be a strict requirement. The goal of the suggested level system is to provide a more clear indication of an item’s power, taking into account the combination of multiple effects of different power levels on a single item.

The suggested level is calculated based on the number of effects on the item and the power level of each effect. Each effect power level is given a numeric weight: mundane = 1, low = 2, medium = 3, and high = 4 (curses have a weight of 0). The suggested level is simply equal to the sum of the weights of all of the effects on a particular item. For example, an item with 1 high effect, 2 medium effects, and 1 mundane effect would have a suggested level of 11 (4 + 3 + 3 + 1 = 11).
